Terms & Conditions

Last updated: June 4, 2026

1. Scope and Subject Matter

These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern the use of LightCalc, a professional lighting calculation tool for cinematographers, directors of photography, and lighting professionals, offered as:

  • a web application accessible at lightcalc.io; and
  • an iOS mobile application ("App") distributed via the Apple App Store.

These Terms apply to all purchases and subscriptions made by individual consumers and professional users ("you" or "User"). All transactions are conducted under a business-to-consumer (B2C) model. Each purchase or subscription confers a single-user licence and prohibits distribution, resale, or sharing of access credentials.

3. Products and Subscription Plans

3.1 Free Tier

LightCalc is available free of charge with access to core lighting calculation features. No payment is required to use the Free Tier. The Free Tier may be subject to feature limitations as described on our website.

3.2 LightCalc Pro — One-Time Purchase

LightCalc Pro is available as a one-time purchase on the web application. Upon successful payment, you receive a perpetual, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Pro features of the web application, including all subsequent updates to those features for as long as the service is available. This licence is personal and may not be transferred or sub-licensed.

3.3 LightCalc Plus — Subscription

LightCalc Plus is available as a recurring subscription on the web application, offered on a monthly or annual basis. A Plus subscription grants access to all Pro features as well as additional features designated as Plus-exclusive, and includes access to the LightCalc iOS app (when available) for the duration of an active subscription.

Subscription terms:

  • Billing is processed at the beginning of each subscription period (monthly or annually) via Stripe.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. You may cancel at any time through your account settings. Access continues until the end of the current billing period; no partial refunds are issued for unused time.
  • We will give you at least 30 days' notice before any price increase takes effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the new price.

3.4 LightCalc iOS App — In-App Purchase

The LightCalc iOS app is available exclusively to LightCalc Plus subscribers. For users who purchase access through the Apple App Store, the following specific terms apply in addition to the rest of these Terms:

Apple App Store — Subscription Disclosure

  • Subscription name: LightCalc Plus (Annual)
  • Subscription length: 1 year (auto-renewing)
  • Price: As displayed in the App Store at the time of purchase, inclusive of applicable taxes.
  • Payment: Payment will be charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.
  • Auto-renewal: Your subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
  • Renewal charge: Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, at the price confirmed at purchase.
  • Managing subscriptions: You can manage your subscription and turn off auto-renewal at any time by going to your Account Settings in the App Store after purchase.
  • Free trials: If a free trial is offered, any unused portion of the free trial period will be forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
  • Cancellation: Cancelling a subscription stops future renewals but does not provide a refund for the current period. Access continues until the end of the paid period.

Apple is not a party to this contract and is not responsible for the LightCalc service. Any claims relating to the App must be addressed to us, not to Apple. Apple has the right to enforce these Terms as a third-party beneficiary.

4. Conclusion of Contract

The presentation of LightCalc plans on our website or in the App Store is an invitation to purchase and does not constitute a binding offer. The purchase contract is concluded when:

  • Web purchases: You click "Buy Now" or "Subscribe", complete payment via Stripe, and receive an order confirmation by email.
  • iOS in-app purchases: You confirm the purchase in the App Store and Apple processes the payment.

Following a web purchase, you will receive two emails: an order confirmation and an invoice with payment details. Access to the purchased plan is granted immediately upon successful payment.

5. Right of Withdrawal (EU Consumers)

As a consumer in the European Union, you generally have the right to withdraw from a distance contract within 14 days without giving a reason, in accordance with the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU (implemented in Austria by the Fern- und Auswärtsgeschäfte-Gesetz, FAGG).

5.1 Waiver for immediate digital delivery — LightCalc Pro

For the LightCalc Pro one-time purchase, digital access is granted immediately upon payment. By completing your purchase, you expressly request that performance of the contract begins immediately and you acknowledge that your right of withdrawal expires upon commencement of performance, as permitted by Art. 16(m) of Directive 2011/83/EU and § 18 para. 1 no. 13 FAGG.

5.2 Subscriptions — LightCalc Plus (Web)

For a new LightCalc Plus subscription, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal from the date of conclusion of the subscription contract, unless you expressly request that service commences before the end of the withdrawal period. If you use the service within the 14-day withdrawal period, you acknowledge that your right of withdrawal is waived upon commencement.

If you wish to exercise your right of withdrawal before using the service, contact us at support@lightcalc.io. We will process your withdrawal and refund within 14 days.

5.3 iOS In-App Purchases

For purchases made through the Apple App Store, Apple's refund policies apply. Refund requests for App Store purchases must be submitted directly to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

6. Prices and Taxes

All prices displayed on lightcalc.io are total prices inclusive of applicable VAT. VAT is calculated based on your country of residence in compliance with applicable tax laws. For iOS App Store purchases, prices shown in the App Store include all applicable taxes as determined by Apple.

We reserve the right to change prices at any time. For existing subscriptions, price changes take effect at the next renewal after at least 30 days' notice.

7. Delivery and Access

LightCalc is a digital service delivered entirely online. Access is granted immediately upon successful payment. No physical goods are shipped.

We strive to maintain service availability of at least 99% per month, excluding scheduled maintenance. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access and are not liable for temporary unavailability due to technical issues or maintenance.

8. Payment Methods

The following payment methods are available on lightcalc.io:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Apple Pay
  • SEPA Direct Debit (where available)

For iOS App Store purchases, payment is processed by Apple and subject to the payment methods available in your Apple ID account.

9. Licence and Acceptable Use

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use LightCalc for your own professional or personal lighting calculation purposes. You may not:

  • Share your account credentials with others;
  • Resell, sublicence, or redistribute access to LightCalc;
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract source code from the App;
  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms;
  • Use automated tools to scrape or extract data from LightCalc beyond normal use.

LightCalc and its underlying intellectual property, including software, algorithms, and calculation methodologies, remain our exclusive property.

10. Disclaimer and Limitation of Liability

LightCalc provides calculations based on industry-standard lighting formulas and fixture data. Results are provided for informational and planning purposes only. Real-world results may vary depending on environmental conditions, fixture characteristics, and other factors outside our control. We do not warrant that calculations are error-free or suitable for any specific production requirement.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, our liability for damages is limited to the amount paid by you for the affected service in the 12 months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. This limitation does not apply to damages caused by gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or to liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (including liability under the Austrian Consumer Protection Act, KSchG).

11. Termination of Account

You may delete your account at any time through your account settings. Deletion cancels any active subscription at the end of the current billing period and permanently removes your project data.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially breach these Terms and fail to remedy the breach within 14 days of written notice. In the event of termination by us without cause, we will refund any unused prepaid subscription period on a pro-rata basis.

12. Online Dispute Resolution

The European Commission provides a platform for online dispute resolution (ODR) at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. Our email address for ODR purposes is support@lightcalc.io.

We are not obliged to participate in dispute resolution before a consumer arbitration board and are currently not willing to do so, but we encourage you to contact us directly first — we aim to resolve all issues promptly.

13. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of Austria, excluding its conflict of law provisions. For consumers within the EU, mandatory consumer protection provisions of your country of residence also apply and are not overridden by this choice of law.

For any disputes, the competent courts of Graz, Austria shall have jurisdiction, without prejudice to any mandatory jurisdiction applicable to consumers under EU law.

14. Updates to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated to registered users by email at least 30 days before taking effect. Continued use of LightCalc after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. The current version is always available at lightcalc.io/terms-conditions.
